Szkoła Podstawowa Nr 112

z Oddziałami Integracyjnymi

im. Marii Kownackiej

w Warszawie

Our school is a primary school in Warsaw, a pretty city situated in central Poland. It is also the capital of Poland. We have over 1000 pupils (5-12 years old) and about 100 teachers. Our school is situated in newly built, modern building. We have two fully-equipped computer rooms and all the other classrooms are equipped in Smart Boards. Moreover, we are focused on developing our students' various skills and talents. Teachers in our school use modern teaching methods which stimulate and involve the students. What is more, we organize various additional classes such as: chess club, multiplication table club, language classes, drama classes, choir, etc.

The school is situated in a rapidly developing district (Bialoleka) in the outskirts of Warsaw. Fast population growth has resulted in an increasing number of pupils at our school as well as changes in the local community. Not so long ago people used to know each other very well as they had lived in the area for generations. Nowadays, most of the inhabitants come  from different parts of Poland or even from abroad, resulting in a local community that is very diverse and not very well integrated. It is a challenge for our school both to satisfy the needs of our pupils as well as to integrate the local community.

A rapid increase in the number of students (from about 80 to 1000 in just a few years) and teachers has caused various organizational problems. There are also students who require after-school care as their parents work long hours. The school helps students develop many of their interests during additional classes. Moreover, we pay special attention to pupils who require more time to learn certain parts of the curriculum/syllabus. Four years ago we created integrated classes where disabled children and those at risk of social exclusion, can learn and develop together with their healthy peers.

Two years ago, we successfully ended Comenius project: "Bridges Over All Kind of Borders". The project involved learning about traditions and cultures of participating countries. What is more, we were supposed to present literary output (mainly tales and poems) of authors whose work was dedicated for children.
